Oxfordshire County Council won Employer of the Year title in the first best practice awards, organised by the Working Mothers Association. Founder Director Lucy Daniels remembers, “Everybody loves an award (probably not now, because there are so many of them but in those days they were a little unusual). And then we found that people loved to support it. We got a Wedgwood urn as a trophy and newspapers covered it … We felt very strongly that if we weren’t getting employers motivated to do it, that was a real missing link. That was one of our strengths, in really bringing that to the table and getting employers to talk about it.”
