Many people have contributed to the flexible working rights and practices that we experience today.

When I returned to work after my first maternity leave in 1992, my options were very limited. Part-time could be found; hours in almost every setting were fixed and inflexible; working from home was barely known. Office work still involved a landline on the desk, often a typewriter rather than a pc, and few people were using email. Meetings were in person.

The transformation of work since then was brought about by people who both responded to necessity and embraced possibility. These Pioneers are politicians, campaigners, employers and thinkers. They asked what needed to change, to enable women with care responsibilities to play a full part in the world of work; and for men to become equal partners at home. And they set about making those changes happen.
